School officials statewide are tackling the problem of concussions and traumatic brain injuries before a bump on the head ends an athlete's life.
A man pistol whipped a woman while she was bathing Monday while breaking into a Newton home and stealing money and pills. Â
Police say Patrick Steven Shuford, 26, of Newton, broke into a mobile home at 4489 Athens Drive in Newton about 11:30 a.m. Monday demanding money from Greg Allen Beard, 29, who lives at the residence.
âHe came in and was shouting âWhereâs my money? Whereâs my money?ââ said Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid.
Reid said the victim knew Shuford, but did not know what he was talking about.
Carolyn Regina Sigmon Thomas, 75, of Maiden passed away Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011 at her home. Goodin-Drum Funeral Home is serving the Thomas family.

WASHINGTON â A 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered northwest of Richmond, Va., shook much of Washington, D.C., and was felt as far north as Rhode Island and New York City and as far south as North Carolina and Alabama.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake was 3.7 miles deep. Shaking was felt at the White House and all over the East Coast, as far south as Chapel Hill. Parts of the Pentagon, White House and Capitol were evacuated. The quake was in Mineral, Va., in Louisa County.
Immediately after the earthquake, social media networks exploded with activity.
Some people would look at the building on 1717 Highland Ave NE in Hickory and just see an old building, but Jeff and Carol Anne Hartman see much more.
âItâs an old house, so itâs not super fancy,â Carol Anne said. âIt doesnât have all the bells and whistles of a new building, but it has charm and character of a space where you just want to soak in everything thatâs been there for the last 70 years and let it create something.â
Davey Glover loves his job.
Heâs a data analyst at Shurtape Technologies in Hickory, and has worked for the company for more than 35 years.
But after being diagnosed with Lou Gherigâs Disease last year, Davey canât talk, can barely walk, and will have to stop working Aug. 31.
Though he is weak and on a feeding tube now, friends, family and colleagues say Davey âwas one of a kind,â âa marvelous man,â and a significant member of his church and community.

The St. Stephens volleyball team won its third match of the season, but Maiden didnât make it easy on them.
After winning the first two games 25-14 and 25-19, the Lady Indians (3-0) fought tooth-and-nail with Maiden (0-1) for the third and deciding game.
St. Stephens persevered past the Blue Devils to win the game and match, 29-27.
âThe last game was a nail-biter,â said Lady Indians coach Denise Mullins. âI am really proud. All the girls really showed their ability. They showed how hard they came to play.â

More political and sandwich board signs may be popping up around Maiden after officials passed a new signage ordinance this week.

âšâWe found problems that (the old ordinance) wasnât meeting the needs of the citizens.
It wasnât allowing newer types of signs to be used,â Schultz said. âWe tried to make it easier to understand for the regular person. We donât always want to be doing enforcement, and we want people to read it, understand it and have a good ordinance in the end.â
