Fair trial possible?

August 4, 2011

Area citizens will not decide Elisa Baker’s fate after a judge granted a change of venue request last week, a ruling that stirs mixed emotions for Catawba County residents.

Some people believe the accused child murderer would "get what she deserves” in Catawba County, but others say it is only fair to move the case to another county.

Newton resident Robby Brooks said he has followed Elisa’s case from the beginning and said the trial should have remained here.

How the EcoComplex benefits you

August 4, 2011

In the past, landfills were abundant in North Carolina. At one point, more than 90 large-scale dumping sites were scattered throughout the state, and nearly every county had its own site. Over time, landfills do just that – fill up – and requirements make it hard for some to continue.

Catawba County still has one of 41 landfills left in the state, but as the name suggests, the county’s EcoComplex does a lot more than collect waste. Between the cracks and behind the scenes, it does a lot for the average citizen than it appears on the surface.

Gunpoint robbery in Newton

August 4, 2011

A Newton couple’s late-night stroll was interrupted Wednesday night after two men robbed the lovers at gunpoint.

Police say Francisco Francisco Matzuy, 61, of Newton, was walking with his girlfriend near the intersection of Main Street and Herman Street in Newton at about 10 p.m. Wednesday when two black male suspects approached the couple. One of the men had a silver revolver and pointed the gun at Matzuy.

The suspect with the gun told Matzuy to, “Give me your wallet. Give me all your money,” said Newton Police Chief Don Brown.

School year gets longer — for teachers

August 4, 2011

The N.C, General Assembly added five more instructional days to the 2011-12 school calendar, but that doesn't mean Catawba County's students will face any extra time in the classroom.

Instead, the county's teachers will.

Hickory held to five hits, no runs in loss

August 4, 2011

The rubber match between Hickory and Hagerstown on the baseball diamond Wednesday was undoubtedly a no contest.

The Suns (60-48, 20-18) had 11 hits on offense, include a pair of two-run homers and a bases clearing triple.

The Crawdads offense, on the other hand, was anything, but hot. Hickory (63-44, 23-16) had five hits from the plate with three of those happening in the second inning.

Hagerstown took a 5-0 lead in the top of the second inning behind the two home runs by shortstop Jason Martinson and catcher Adrian Nieto. The homers brought in a total of four runs.

Bullpen helps Suns escape with victory

August 4, 2011

After a game between the Hickory Crawdads and Hagerstown Suns on Monday that featured a combined 33 hits and 27 runs, things cooled down just a bit Tuesday.

Both teams had five hits each through five innings, but their two strong bullpens allowed a combined three hits and no runs, allowing Hagerstown to take a 3-2 road win.

Hagerstown (59-48, 19-18) took the early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. With runners on first and second, third basemen Sean Nicol singled over the head of second basemen Odubel Herrera to plate catcher David Freitas.
