Rape survivor to speak to local professionals, citizens

A rape survivor will share her story with area law enforcement, mental health clinicians and other local groups today to help educate working professionals about sexual violence.

Debbie Smith, and her husband Rob, will be the keynote speakers at the seventh annual Sexual Assault Response Team Conference held today from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Tri-City Baptist Church in Conover.

Juvenile driver strikes man

A Tennessee man was taken to the hospital Tuesday after an unlicensed juvenile driver struck him in a Kmart parking lot in Conover.

Authorities and witnesses said a juvenile driver was exiting the Kmart parking lot off U.S. 70 in Conover at about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday when his

Kia Soul struck a 60-year-old man walking along the pedestrian crossing adjacent to the store’s entrance.

Conover Police Sgt. B. Lowdermilk said the white male victim was taken to Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory and was “talking and alert.”

The juvenile driver was the only occupant in the car.

Thief strikes supermarket

Newton Police were able to locate and arrest a Statesville man Tuesday that stole money from an area grocery store after distracting an employee.
Authorities say Burley Roberts Mayberry, 37, of Statesville, walked into the El Caporal grocery store in Newton at about 10:45 a.m. Tuesday and stole an undisclosed amount of money from the store's cash register.

Sheila M. Sain, 65, of Conover, died unexpectedly Sunday, June 26, 2011, at her residence.  The Sain family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton.

Charles L. Bunn, 82, of Conover, died unexpectedly Monday, June 27, 2011, at his residence.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Drum Funeral Home in Conover.

Janice Wilkinson Braswell, 70, of Conover, died Monday, June 27, 2011, at her residence.

Elisa Baker hearing postponed

June 28, 2011

Elisa Baker did not appear in court Tuesday because the judge presiding over her court cases was out of town.

A pre-trial hearing for Baker was postponed until July 14 on Tuesday after Superior Court Judge Timothy Kincaid filed an order last week that will make him the sole judge ruling over her cases. Kincaid was outside Catawba County on Tuesday in Gastonia, said Superior Court Judge Eric Levinson.

CCS fights transportation, overtime funds

Catawba County Schools transportation funds were cut 2.5 percent "across the board," according to the state education budget. With the decrease, CCS Superintendent Glenn Barger recommended the board consider implementing ways to reduce overtime. One idea includes hiring 62 contract bus drivers.
In essence, these 62 individuals will be part-time employees with CCS, which will help the school system reduce overtime funds. Barger said the bus drivers will be certified.

CCS Board approves personnel cuts

Catawba County Schools Board of Education approved to cut 34 certified positions and 27 teacher assistant positions at its Monday meeting.

The 34 positions cut include:
2 central office positions
1.5 ESL teachers
11.5 exceptional children teachers
6 elementary positions
1 middle school position
6 high school positions
2 high school media positions
2 high school counselors
1 dropout prevention counselor
1 More at Four position

EcoComplex development continues

County officials and workers are putting the “finishing touches” on the new facility that is turning waste into energy. 


Jack Chandler, assistant director for Catawba County Utilities and Engineering, said development to the Catawba County Regional EcoComplex and Resource Recovery Facility is continuing and going to plan.
