Warrior mistakes help Bears reach CVAC final

West Caldwell committed seven errors in Friday's CVAC tournament game. Bunker Hill capitalized.

The Bears scored four runs of those errors and 10 total runs on their way a victory. Pitcher Jacob Shepherd and catcher Tyler Shook had two RBIs each in the win.

Three runs scored for the Bears in the first inning. Cole McGraw walked, Cody Ervin and Jeremy Null reached on errors. All scored later in the inning to make it 3-0.

Boater's leg amputated in accident

A boater lost part of his leg Friday morning, after he was thrown from his boat near Lake Norman Marina in Catawba County.

A 33-year-old man was on a boat alone at about 11 a.m. Friday when he made a sharp turn that threw him out of the boat, said Keith Bost, chief for Sherrills Ford-Terrell Fire and Rescue. Bost said the boat was then unmanned and going in circles in the water.

He said the unidentified man tried to dive down to avoid the boat's prop, but his legs got tangled in the motor's part.

TWO STUDENTS TO RECEIVE TEACHING FELLOWS

Out of 500 North Carolina students, two Newton-Conover High School students were accepted as Teaching Fellows for this year.

"To receive this scholarship, it is just a great feeling," said Rawdon Marroquin, a selected Teaching Fellow. "Out of the nine people from Newton-Conover who applied to get the scholarship, I was one of the two to actually receive it."

Marroquin and Ashley Bandy were NCHS's two Teaching Fellows for this year, which brings each student excitement as they plan to graduate high school and go to college.

Pauline Virginia Killian Kiziah, 95, of Conover, died Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at the Lutheran Home East. 
The Kiziah family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Conover. 

Jean Setzer Canipe, 66, of Maiden, passed away Thursday, May 5, 2011, at Frye Regional Medical Center.  Services will be held Saturday, May 7, 2011, at Goodin-Drum Funeral Home at 2 p.m.

Paramount Automotive Group officially opened Catawba County's only Porsche, Volvo and Volkswagon dealership with a ribbon cutting on Thursday. The newly constructed 10,305 square-foot facility represents the latest innovations for the three automotive brands as well as the family operating the dealership.
