Tattoo artists can now ink a permanent place in the heart of Newton.
Newton City Council approved a move that will allow tattoo parlors to be established in the city’s B-3 central business district in the downtown area. With the green light, Newton residents Margaret and Jonathan Landers hope to ink a deal to buy a downtown building and establish a business that offers more than tattoos.
In leau of the Harlem Globetrotter’s performance in Hickory on Sunday, Anthony “Buckets” Blakes discusses a variety of topics, including his early memories of watching the Globetrotters, his favorite players and his experiences with the team.
Below is what he had to say in a one-on-one interview.
Q: Growing up as a kid, were the Globetrotters something you ever got a chance to see or watch?
Three former Newton-Conover graduates were inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame during the winter sports athletic banquet Monday.
Among those inducted were John Tate, Christi Crawford and Tim Elrod.
Tate spent more than 50 years giving various contributions to Red Devil athletics, including coaching officiating and playing.
Tate also worked at the Newton News Enterprise from 1951-1954.
Cranford was inducted for her athletic performance at the school. She finished as all-conference softball and basketball three times (1985-87) and tennis once (1986).
Population increased in Newton from 2000 to 2010, but there are more vacant homes within the city's limits.
Newton's latest resident count increased by 408 people, but those people aren't filling up all the city's vacant properties, which increased 63 percent since 2000.
Results from Newton's 2010 census revealed the city's residents increased about 3.2 percent since the last time the population count was conducted 10 years ago. The city's latest population count includes 12,968 residents.
The Rev. H. David "H.D." Shrum, 85, of Lincolnton, passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at CMC-Lincoln. Services will be held Friday, March 18, 2011, at 2:30 p.m. at E. F. Drum Funeral Home Chapel.
Jeffrey “Jeff” Kent Cooke, 56, died Monday, March 14, 2011, at his residence. The Cooke family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton.
A Newton-Conover City Schools coach and teacher was inducted into the system's hall of fame Monday night, honoring the man's commitment to students and physical education.
Tim Elrod, 55, was one of three people chosen to be part of the Newton-Conover Hall of Fame, an honor designed to recognize excellence in and commitment to athletics. This is Elrod's 31st year as Shuford Elementary School's physical education teacher, and he coached track and field for 27 years at Newton-Conover High School.
"That's the only thing I've ever wanted to do," Elrod said. "I've been so blessed here."

RALEIGH, N.C. — Sidney Lowe has resigned after five seasons as North Carolina State men's basketball coach, according to a person familiar with the situation
The person spoke to The Associated Press Tuesday on condition of anonymity because the school has yet to announce Lowe's resignation.
Lowe had an 86-78 overall record, but just 25-55 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. He inherited a program coming off five straight NCAA tournament trips, but he never finished higher than ninth in the ACC despite twice being picked to finish in the top third of the 12-team league.
Police say they know who is responsible for an early morning shooting and robbery that left three dead and another injured.
Catawba County sheriff's deputies issued three murder warrants for Everette Proshau Hewitt, 32, of Claremont.
Hewitt remains at large, and he is considered armed and dangerous.
Catawba County Sheriff Coy Reid announced Tuesday at noon that a third person died from gunshot wounds sustained during a robbery and shooting in a mobile home on Emmanuel Church Road in Conover.
Four people were shot during an early morning home invasion in Conover on Tuesday.
Catawba County sheriff's deputies report two people were killed and two others injured in the invasion at a mobile home park off Emmanuel Church Road about 4:30 a.m.
Two people were taken to the hospital, one in critical condition, and the other is stable, according to investigators.
Emerging details indicate a masked gunman knocked on the door of a home in the Oak Knoll mobile home park. When a resident answered the door the man demanded money and shots were fired.
