Brenda Gail Williams Lail, 57, of Conover, died Monday, Feb. 14, 2011, at Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley. A celebration of life and worship service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 17, 2011, at Tri City Baptist Church.

Jeffery Lee “Yogi” Alexander, 53, of Hickory, passed away Feb. 14, 2011, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory.  The Alexander family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Hickory.

Overturned truck closes U.S. 321

Portions of U.S. 321 between Newton and Maiden were closed Tuesday after a tractor trailer overturned.

The crash happened shortly after 10 a.m. Tuesday when a tractor trailer flipped over at the intersection of U.S. 321 Business and Elliott Lane, just outside of Newton city limits. 

Several powerlines were downed from the crash. The live wires stretched across the road as emergency responders worked on the scene. 

The driver of the truck was transported by ambulance to Catawba Valley Medical Center. 

Murder suspect took 'too many' pills

A 19-year-old who shot and mutilated his roommate confessed his actions to 9-1-1 dispatchers, even detailing the circumstances that brought him into the Mountain View home of the victim.
“Um, I took some pills and then some more pills and I murdered my roommate,” Michael Anderson told a 9-1-1 dispatcher with Catawba County Communications. “I shot him three times and then used an axe and mutilated his body.”
Anderson has been charged with murder in the Monday morning death of Stephens Starr, 36, in the Mountain View area. Anderson called 9-1-1 about 4:54 a.m. Monday.

Teen mutilates roommate

A Kings Mountain man is charged with murder after he allegedly shot, stabbed and mutilated his roommate before calling police and alerting them to the crime.
Michael Joseph Anderson, 19, called police at 4:47 a.m. Monday and reported he shot his roommate, Stephen Eric Starr, 36. Investigators determined majority of Starr’s wounds happened after he was dead.
Deputies arrived 8 minutes after the call at 5209 Ruth Drive. They found Starr shot, stabbed and struck with a log-splitting, axe-like tool in the master bedroom of his residence.

Opening act: Whitener scores 19 points, as N-C advances to semifinals

Monday was a day all about love. For the Lady Red Devils and Lady Bears, it was all about survival.

Newton-Conover's Shynese Whitener scored 19 points and the Lady Red Devils got key bench play down the stretch as they picked up a CVAC tournament first round win against Bunker Hill.

Despite the victory, N-C coach Jonathan Tharpe was disappointed in his team's energy for most of the game.

Theodore “Ted” Dennis Parkhurst, 76, of Hildebran, passed away Monday, Feb. 14, 2011, at Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba Valley.  Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Parkhurst family.

William James Carroll Sr., 76, of Claremont, left this world to be with his heavenly father Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at Catawba Valley Medical Center.  The Carroll family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to Willlis-Reynolds Funeral Home & Crematory in Newton.

Playground to honor Zahra

The city of Hickory is joining forces with area service clubs to create a playground suitable for children with disabilities in honor of a deceased Hickory girl who used a prosthetic leg and hearing aids.

Four Catawba County Kiwanis clubs announced Monday that they want to purchase, build and install a playground at the Kiwanis Park in Hickory to celebrate the life of Zahra Baker.

Q marries U at Shuford Elementary

Students at Shuford Elementary School were guests at a couple's wedding ceremony Monday for a marriage guaranteed to last a lifetime.

Diane Howard's kindergarten class celebrated the marriage of the letters Q and U in a service complete with flowers, wedding bands and rose petals.

The "marriage" taught students that the letters Q and U are hardly ever separated in the English language. Howard's female students dressed in white, wore veils and carried miniature bouquets provided by Butch Coley of Newton Florist. The boys in the class wore suits and ties.

Man critical after train hits car

A Hickory man is in serious condition Monday after a train hit the car he was a passenger in early Sunday.
A 2010 Dodge Challenger, driven by Cedric Genwright, 26, of Lenoir, was accompanied with three other males. The men were traveling away from Union Square at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday near Second Street Southwest. The car never made it over the railroad tracks on Second Street Southwest.

Deputies investigate murder

A 19-year-old is in custody after he apparently killed his roommate and carved a word into his body.
Catawba County sheriff's deputies are investigating the apparent homicide at 5209 Ruth Drive in Hickory.
Officials said the shooting happened about 4:50 a.m. Monday.
Authorities said Stephen Starr, 36, was shot and stabbed several times and then hit with an ax by his roommate, Michael Anderson, 19. Anderson also carved a word into the side of Starr, but authorities will not release that information at this time.
