County pushes legal tree recycling

December 26, 2011

County officials are urging residents to dispose of their Christmas trees in the correct — and legal — manner.

Area residents can recycle Christmas trees at five solid waste convenience centers throughout the county through Jan. 31.

The county, in coordination with Garbage Disposal Services (GDS), will also provide curbside collection of trees Jan. 9-20.

Disposal of Christmas trees in regular trash containers is illegal, according to North Carolina law.

"It was an exciting and very humbling experience," Hipps said of being honored on the field. "It definitely ranks near the top of my experiences in life. It was pretty cool to be out on the field with those players."

He first learned about the honor in an announcement he received in the mail.

CHARLOTTE — Cam Newton had no shortage of doubters coming into the NFL.

They're much harder to find now.

The No. 1 pick in the NFL draft added to his remarkable season by breaking Peyton Manning's rookie record for yards passing and setting a franchise mark with a 91-yard touchdown toss to Brandon LaFell as the Carolina Panthers handed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers their ninth straight defeat, 48-16 on Saturday.

Catawba County's week ahead

December 26, 2011

Many local organizations take a break this week between Christmas Day and New Year's Day, so the schedule of events in Catawba County is light.

However, there are opportunities to see all seven county high schools in action on the basketball court, as well as a Kwanzaa celebration and a New Year's Eve bash in Hickory.

Monday
Ridgeview Library in Hickory will offer a Kwanzaa celebration at 6 p.m. in the Ridgeview Recreational Center.
