Trojans rally behind Young, strong defense

November 6, 2011

It was a tale of two halfs for Bandys on Friday night in its first round playoff match-up against Ashe County.

After trailing 14-12 at halftime, the Trojans rallied behind four second half touchdowns by running back Dominique Young, and the defense forced four turnovers, leading Bandys to the 40-14 victory in Catawba.

The Trojans opened the game with a bang. After returning the opening kickoff to their own 44-yard line, quarterback David Barrow tossed a 56-yard pass to Hunter Lackey to make it a 6-0 game. The extra point was blocked.

Maiden cruised past East Rutherford in the opening round of the 2A state playoffs. The Blue Devils will play Polk County next Friday in the second round.

Maiden's defense put together a strong performance, and that didn't go unnoticed by coach Brian Brown in the postgame.

"I am proud of our defense tonight; they really stepped it up," Brown said.

Early on, Maiden quarterback Matt Johnson found Dakota Painter from 17 yards out to give the Blue Devils (8-4, 6-1) a 7-0 advantage in the first quarter.
