Current councilwoman Penny Corpening will not seek re-election after withdrawing from the race in September.

Economic roadblock

Catawba County officials say a state ranking system hinders job creation here and throughout North Carolina.

The state gives growing companies larger incentives if they set up shop in a lower-tiered area — or one it considers more economically distressed — and less to counties ranked as more economically successful.

“The County has contracted with Clean Harbors to handle the collection of household hazardous waste and eCycleSecure to collect electronic waste,” said Amanda Kain, Catawba County’s Waste Reduction Coordinator.
