Blue Devils' Brown resigns

For the first time in nearly 40 seasons, a Brown won’t be on the sideline as a coach for the Maiden football team next season.

Brian Brown resigned as the head football coach of the Blue Devils on Monday.

Brown held a meeting Monday with his players and coaches to announce the decision.

“I said when I took this job that I didn’t know how long I’d be doing it,” Brown said in a phone interview. “I just think it’s time. I just have some other things I want to do.”

Brown, a former player at Maiden, spent 13 seasons as a member of the Blue Devils’ coaching staff.

Cecil Joe Heavner, 76, of East Maiden Road, Maiden, died Monday, Nov. 21, 2011 at his son’s residence with Catawba County Hospice of Newton.  Burke Mortuary in Maiden is serving the Heavner Family.

Christy Lee Moore, 35, of Newton, died Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011 at Catawba Valley Medical Center. Bass-Smith Funeral Home is serving the family of Christy Lee Moore.

Filling hunger's void

Each year, area aid groups feed thousands of people in need on Thanksgiving Day.

This year is no different, and local churches, ministries and organizations anticipate feeding record numbers this week.

“The need keeps growing, so the support and giving keeps growing,” said Roger Baker, executive director for Greater Hickory Cooperative Christian Ministries (CCM).

Honor for Newton hero

Newton's Andrew Rader would have turned 100 this year.

Rader — a doctor and U.S. Army major — died at 33 in the sinking of a Japanese prisoner ship in World War II. A Catawba County effort now seeks to honor his military and medical services.

Sylvia Ray, a former editor of The Observer News Enterprise, is leading the charge to have federal legislators and Veterans Administration officials name the new VA clinic on Tate Boulevard in Hickory in his honor.

Crash stalls Old U.S. 70 traffic

November 21, 2011

Traffic in both directions on Old U.S. 70 in Conover were closed near the on-ramp to Interstate 40 after a silver Toyota car slammed into a telephone pole near the ramp Monday evening.

The pole snapped in half, bringing down street lights and two sets of traffic lights at the intersection.

The woman driving the Toyota was transported to Frye Regional Medical Center for examination.

Panthers steal defeat from victory's jaws

DETROIT — Matthew Stafford shook off a couple of early interceptions, then went about leading the Detroit Lions to yet another memorable comeback.

The Lions quarterback matched a career-best with five touchdown passes, the final one a 7-yarder to Brandon Pettigrew with 2:32 left, and the Lions rallied for a 49-35 win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

"We were killing ourselves with turnovers," he said. "We knew that we'd be able to score in the second half if we could just keep our hands on the ball."
