Johnson’s 2nd OT goal propels N-C

Down 1-0 at halftime against West Davidson, the Newton-Conover soccer team rallied.

The Red Devils (21-2-1) to score one goal in the second half and another in the second overtime.

“We knew it was going to be a tough one,” said N-C coach Angelo Palozzi. “They did their scouting report. They had their gameplan, which was to sit back, put a couple guys on Chandler and let the rest of the team beat them.”

West Davidson took a 1-0 lead behind a header goal in the 25th minute by David Monk. The Green Dragons carried the advantage into halftime.

BREAKING NEWS: Missing Lincoln County man found

November 2, 2011

Search teams found a Denver man early Thursday morning about eight hours after he was reported missing.

Searchers found Johnny Thompson, 72, in a wooded area about a half mile from his home at 3 a.m. Thursday. Thompson was awake and leaning against a tree.

Lincoln County EMS Parademics evaluated Thompson and took him to the hospital.

At 7:55 p.m. Wednesday, Denver Fire Department responded to the report of a missing person in the area of St. James Church Road and Kidville Road. The Lincoln County Land Search Team and other groups helped search for Thompson.

Maiden men on council quests

Seven candidates hope to secure a seat on the Maiden Town Council in this year's election.

Only three men will be successful in that quest.

Incumbents David Boldon, Max Bumgarner Jr. and Howard Ervin are running for re-election.

They are joined by challengers George McClellan, who served four years ago on the council; Mike Moore, who served on the council from 2007-2009; William (Bill) Cashion, who is running for the first time; and Wayne McKinney.

Only Boldon, Bumgarner and Moore responded to an election survey from The O-N-E. Read more about those candidates on page 2.

Arthur “Art” Eugene Barnes, 92, of Newton, formerly of New York, died Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011 at Abernethy Laurels in Newton.  Condolences may be sent to the Barnes family at www.drumfuneralhome.com.

Nola May Fox Deal, 84, of Hickory, died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2011 at Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley in Newton after a brief battle with cancer.  Burke Mortuary in Newton is serving the Deal family.

Minds in motion

Later this month, Shivam Desai will coast 800 feet through downtown Lenoir while lying on his stomach in a wooden and metal car propelled by compressed air in a propane tank.

His physics teacher and his classmates will cheer him through the whole ride.

Desai and his honors physics classmates at Newton-Conover High School comprise one of at least six teams from Catawba County schools that will participate in the first Western North Carolina Gravity Games Soapbox Race.

"I want to be an engineer," said Desai, a senior. "So I was all game for this."

BREAKING: Mayfield busted again

Former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield is in trouble — again.

Mayfield was arrested on methamphetamine possession charges Tuesday afternoon at his home in Catawba.

Catawba County sheriff's deputies found about 1.5 grams of methamphetamine inside Mayfield's residence at 6397 Hudson Chapel Road around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Deputies were serving a search warrant for suspected stolen property when they found the drugs in an undisclosed room in Mayfield's home.

Officers also seized a "large amount of stolen goods" from buildings and trailers.
