County to discuss issues tied to state budget

Catawba County Commissioners will hold a special meeting Thursday to discuss legislative opportunities, challenges and consequences of the state’s budget.

Commissioners will meet with members of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners’ Advocacy Team (NCACC) on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in Catawba Valley Community College’s Sipe Boardroom.

County officials say commissioners normally discuss legislative agendas for the N.C. General Assembly and U.S. Congress, and Thursday’s meeting will highlight current issues facing the state.

Solid memories

Since Zahra Baker was reported missing on Oct. 9, 2010, groups across the state have held events, memorials and remembrance ceremonies for the late 10-year-old girl.

Organizations like the Kiwanis Club have raised thousands of dollars for a Zahra Baker memorial playground. Groups like the Children’s Advocacy and Protection Agency have held remembrance ceremonies to remember Zahra and all other child homicide victims.

On Sunday, area authorities used a brick to remember the little girl.

BREAKING STATE NEWS: N.C. Sen. Jim Forrester dies at 74

RALEIGH — North Carolina state Sen. Jim Forrester, a physician and social conservative who secured a legislative victory just weeks ago with a constitutional referendum next spring on whether to ban gay marriage, died Monday after a brief hospitalization, according to his daughter. He was 74.

Conover man charged in stabbing

A Conover man is in jail after authorities say he tried to kill a man with a box cutter early Saturday morning.

Authorities say one man stabbed another in the neck when an argument between the men escalated after midnight Saturday near the 2800 block of 12th Avenue Southeast in Hickory.

Hickory police say Andre Douglas Little, 42, of Conover, was arguing with an acquaintance at about 12:16 a.m. Saturday at the Ridgecrest Apartments when he stabbed the man in the neck.

CRIME NEWS: Claremont woman caught in theft

A fellow customer caught a Claremont woman stealing basic hygiene and consumer items at the local Dollar General store on Friday night.

Authorities say Jamie Sartin, 34, of 4243 Jennifer Lane in Claremont, was shopping at the Dollar General on Centennial Boulevard at about 8:50 p.m. Friday when a customer saw her trying to steal several items.

The customer alerted store officials, who found Sartin trying to steal deodorant, toothpaste, oil candles and several other items from the store.

Claremont Police were called and cops charged Sartin with concealment of goods.
