The search for a new Catawba County Schools superintendent is under way.
Advertisements for the available position were posted Sept. 7, and the application deadline is Nov. 22. The CCS Board of Education hired the N.C. School Board Association to accept applications and serve as a hub for the search.
Meanwhile, CCS employees and community members are asked to complete an online survey, which was posted Sept. 7 on the CCS website at www.catawbaschools.net.
Newton-Conover City Schools Board of Education approved its $31.5 million budget during a Monday work session at Central Office.
The 2010-11 budget was a slight increase from last year's $30 million budget. The increase was not related to the school system receiving additional funding, according to Carmen Houston, NCCS finance director.
Houston said additional money showing up in this year's budget is the remaining federal money received last year for the Education Job Fund, which is to pay school-based salaries.
Murray Elementary School is close to having renovations that could alleviate school traffic issues on Section House Road.

A seat belt and an airbag saved the life of a Hickory man Thursday after his car crashed into a tractor trailer.
Eduardo Cervantes, 31, was driving in the 1500 block of U.S. 70-A in Conover at 8:21 a.m. when his car hit the back of an 18-wheeler, according to Shannon Roberts of the Conover Police Department.
The tractor trailer was stopped in the roadway attempting to turn, and Cervantes told police the sun prevented him from seeing the truck until it was too late, Roberts said.
Former Catawba County commissioner Glenn Barger will take his seat in the superintendent's office today.
Barger was approved by Catawba County Schools Board of Education in August to be the interim superintendent effective Oct. 1 after former superintendent Dr. Tim Markley accepted a job with New Hanover County Schools in Wilmington. Markley also starts his new position today.
Larry Walter Boyles, 64, of Stanley, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at his residence. The family will receive friends Sunday, Sept. 26, 2010, at the home of his sister Betty.
Ronald Lee Setzer Sr., 55, of Granite Falls, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2010, at WFU-Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. The Setzer family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home & Cremation Services in Conover.
