August 22nd
Two people were killed and four others injured in a head-on collision early Sunday on Startown Road near Settlemyre Bridge Road.
According to N.C. Highway Patrol, the wreck occurred about 1:45 a.m. Sunday when a 1990 Chevrolet pick-up truck driven by Christopher Greene, 27, collided head-on with a Dodge pick-up truck. Green and a passenger of his vehicle, Brian Lail, 30, were killed in the wreck. Lail was riding in the bed of the truck, according to Highway Patrol.
Four passengers in the Dodge were injured in the wreck.

From the opening kick-off of the season’s opening game it became quickly clear that turnovers would play a big role in Maiden’s contest against North Lincoln.
In fact after Maiden fumbled the game’s opening kick-off, it appeared the turnover battle would bounce the way of the Blue Devils’ visiting opponent.
However, between one interception by Richard Kerekes and ensuing 44-yard return that set up a Maiden touchdown before half-time and a third quarter interception by Alex Lomax that set up another Blue Devil score, the home team was able to turn the turnover tide in their favor.
The Bandys Trojans sported a new look Friday on the plains of Plateau Road — conservative.
The Trojans were not the pass-slinging teams of the past three seasons. They lined up under center more, and they ran the ball a lot more.
“We are going to ram the ball down opponents’ throats every play,” wide receiver Dylan King said. “That’s all we are going to do — just run it down their throats, run it down their throats.”
August 20th
Two people got a shock this week when they tried to start their vehicles and nothing happened.
They returned to their cars and found thieves stole their car batteries.
The thefts happened on two different occasions in the parking lot of Catawba Valley Community College’s main campus.
Both incidents happened Tuesday afternoon, about four hours apart, in broad daylight.
“When the person took the battery, they did it quickly,” said Capt. Roy Brown, of the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office.
They’ve practiced drills for weeks, sweated in 90-degree weather, and now they’re ready to take the field on Friday nights this fall in crisp uniforms.
No, it’s not area football teams; it’s the marching bands.
High school band and color guard members, as well as their directors, practiced for weeks in preparation of upcoming football and marching band season.
And just like the football players who make touchdown passes look effortless, band members, too, work hard to deliver an exciting performance every Friday night.
The county tax office, which is amidst a more than two-year revaluation process, aims to mail property owners new valuation notices in mid-November.
Revaluation, which takes place every four years in Catawba County, aims to reflect accurate land values in the county.
State law requires North Carolina counties to conduct property revaluations every eight years, but counties are allowed to revalue property more frequently.
A $5.3-million renovation project at Arndt Middle School is under way and on schedule, but there are a few things parents, students and staff need to be aware of before starting the new school year.
Rick Sain, Catawba County Schools facilities management director, said the staff and visitor parking lot is complete and the driveway for parents to drop off students is finished. However, a new road that connects Arndt and to Sulphur Springs Road is still under construction.
Hugh Everett Bumgarner, 84, of Newton, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2010, at Abernethy Laurels in Newton. The Bumgarner family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Drum Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Conover.
Kathleen Pennell Austin, 72, of Conover, died Friday, Aug. 20, 2010, at Palliative CareCenter and Hospice of Catawba Valley. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 23, 2010, at Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Lenoir.

There are four games tonight featuring five teams from Catawba County, and two of them are home games. The Bandys Trojans travel Friday to Plateau Road to take on the Fred T. Foard Tigers, and the Maiden Blue Devils host North Lincoln for the 2010 season opener.
The Fred T. Foard Tigers took home the top prize at this week’s Freedom Soccer Invitational. The Tigers defeated Asheville 1-0 Thursday on a penalty kick by Brody Ruffner.
Ruffner is the 2010 tournament MVP, and teammates Nick Bolick and Jason Smith were named to the all-tournament team.
Foard finished the tournament with a 2-0-1 record. The Tigers tied Mooresville 1-1 in Monday’s opening match, beat host Freedom 2-1 on Tuesday, and won the championship Thursday.
Foard plays at home Monday against Boiling Springs Crest.
