Babies parade on Court Square

August 18, 2010

Amber Merrill cried when her 6-month-old daughter won the Soldiers Reunion Baby Parade.

Though Merrill cried tears of joy for Peyton’s win, she also cried because her daughter’s father wasn’t there to see her win the birth to age 1 division of the parade.

Peyton’s father, Ethan Merrill, is serving time in Afghanistan, where he has been for about 10 weeks. “We’re very proud,” Merrill said of her daughter’s win.

Reunion Week schedule

The 121st annual Soldiers Reunion continues today for Reunion Day on the Court Square in downtown Newton. Here is a schedule of today's events, as well as scheduled events to finish Reunion Week.

Thursday
9 a.m. Activities start on the Court Square with many vendors participating.
10 a.m. Memorial service to honor veterans who died in the past year. The guest speaker will be N.C. Department of the American Legion Commander Bill Oxford of Lenoir. The event will be held on the Court Square in Newton.

OPOP a year later

A year ago, officials with The Green Room Community Theatre helped kick-off Reunion Day by breaking ground on a new $3.5-million project to create a new performing arts center in downtown Newton.
Today, plenty has changed at the property where shovels turned dirt near the corner of A Street and Main Avenue, and this week, Newton city leaders got one of the first glimpses at a facility that has been a beehive of activity since construction started.

House fire destroys 1 room

One room of a mobile home was destroyed Wednesday after an early morning fire in Newton.

Newton Fire Department was dispatched to 2733 Burnley Drive at 8:33 a.m.

Firefighters arrived on the scene at 8:38 a.m. to find smoke coming from the double-wide mobile home's master bedroom.

The fire destroyed the master bedroom and its contents. Smoke damaged other parts of the home.

The residents weren't at home during the fire, and no one was injured.

Medal of Honor recipient at Reunion

August 18, 2010

The 121st annual Newton Soldiers Reunion event continues Thursday when the afternoon service begins at 4 p.m. on the east side of the Court Square. The Reunion Service will feature special guest Command Sergeant Major Gary L. Littrell, recipient of the prestigious Medal of Honor.

Littrell will provide special remarks at the service, following welcomes by Newton Mayor Pro Tem Anne Stedman and Catawba County Commission Chairperson Kitty Barnes. Col. Bradley McRee will be the featured speaker for the patriotic service.

N-C Loses Opening Match

The Newton-Conover Red Devils lost 8-1 to Lake Norman on Tuesday in their opening tennis match of the 2010 season. Hanna Sigmon and Alex Barone teamed up in doubles to earn the Red Devils' only point in the match.
