With a 14-14 tie at halftime and a first half when Hickory was its “own worst enemy,” the Red Tornadoes needed a special second half to keep playoff hopes alive.
According Hickory quarterback Kyle Johnson, it was “gut check time.”
“At halftime, we knew it was a close game, so we had to come out here and finish,” Johnson said. “It was something we hadn’t done all year, and we finally did it.”
Hickory scored three second-half touchdowns, including 14 unanswered points in a 77-second span in the fourth quarter to seal a 35-21 win over rival St. Stephens.
Reggie Davis knows the stars should shine the brightest on homecoming.
The junior running back provided the excitement in Bunker Hill’s 39-14 win over West Caldwell, finishing with 267 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns. The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Bears.
“If he’s fired up, we’re fired up,” said Bears quarterback Joe Litton. “Just give him the ball a few times, talk to him a little bit and get him going.”
Newton-Conover characteristically got off to a slow start Friday against Draughn.
The Red Devils were called for two penalties on offense on the first series, including a touchdown run by Jervasse Herrin negated by a holding penalty.
They traded touchdowns with the Wildcats, and late in the first half Octavius Harden returned a kickoff 96 yards to break a 14-14 tie.
