The search of the landfill in Caldwell County for evidence related to the disappearance and possible death of 10-year-old Zahra Clare Baker came to a conclusion Friday afternoon after three days, and teams scouring the piles of trash did not find the evidence they were seeking.
Hickory Police Department released a statement late Friday indicating that teams completed their search of the Foothills Environmental, Inc. landfill off Cheraw Road in western Caldwell County at 3 p.m., also confirming that they had been looking for a mattress.
Kay Kristen Williams Cunningham, 64, of Hickory, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010. A celebration of her life ceremony will be privately held by her family.
Burgin Lee Laney, 90, of Maiden, passed away Friday, Oct. 22, 2010, at his residence. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Burke Mortuary.
Tammy Delores Blackwell Chester, 39, of Maiden, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010, in Florida due to an automobile accident. The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. at the church prior to the service.
Going into this year’s volleyball playoffs, the Newton-Conover Red Devils knew what they could achieve. It started Thursday night with a 3-0 (25-5, 25-16, 25-14) win at home over Wilkes Central in the first round of the 2-A West playoffs.
The level of confidence, however, is higher in 2010 than it was in 2009.
“Last year, we made it to the fourth round, but we had no idea we were going to go that far,” junior Corbin Evans said. “I think we should have gotten past that round, but we just weren’t a team. This year, we are a team, and I think we’ll go very far.”
