If any one thing made Maiden, it was the textile mills. The town was built around the mills from the very beginning. Without them, without that history, Maiden wouldn’t be what it is today. Mayor Bob Smyre came to Maiden for the first time in 1960 at the age of 25. “When I came here (the town) was all mills and furniture,” he said. “It was a furniture and cotton mill town.” It was thriving, too. |

Conover police are following leads in Wisconsin and Kentucky that suggest murder suspect Fong Kong Yang stole a car and may be headed south. Police Chief Gary Lafone said Yang’s female companion, who is alleged to be Yang’s girlfriend, drove him to Wisconsin. She told police officers in Wisconsin she dropped him off there. “She didn’t do anything to hide or protect him,” Lafone said. |

Irene Hinson is the oldest member of the oldest church in Maiden who still comes to services each Sunday at Memorial United Church of Christ. The crumbling clay bricks of the old church are the foundation of faith stretching back to the days of her great grandfather and the founding of the village in 1883. The original coal-burning furnace still sits in the basement. Her great grandfather, D.M. Boyd, was a charter member of the church, which was organized on Sept. 23, 1886. The church was a part of Hinson’s life from the day she was born, on May 27, 1925. She was baptized there a year later and attended church with her parents. |
